New Nerf N-Strike Elite Rhino-Fire!

N-Strike Elite Rhino-Fire blaster

Early this morning, Amazon Spain leaked a listing for a big bad blaster: the Rhino-Fire. After a good part of the day was spent pouring over the images, trying to see what kinds of features it may have, we received word from Nerf HQ. The Rhino fire is the ‘Mystery Blaster’ that was teased during the recent US blogger hangout with Nerf as well as during this year’s Nerf Event in New York (Check out our video here discussing the party with Foam From Above and ClickClickBamf)

Here’s the blaster blurb we received this afternoon:

NERF N-STRIKE ELITE RHINO-FIRE Blaster

(Ages 8 years & up/Approx. Retail Price: $99.99/Available: Fall 14)

Dominate the competition with the biggest, baddest NERF blaster yet! The N-STRIKE ELITE RHINO-FIRE blaster is the first fully automatic NERF blaster featuring rapid-fire, double barrel blasting, an amazing 50 dart capacity and two N-STRIKE ELITE dart drums, turning ordinary battles into extraordinary ones. The epic RHINO-FIRE blaster sends darts soaring impressive ELITE distances of up to 90 feet, and features both a front handle for mobility and tripod to ensure awesome accuracy. Includes 50 N-STRIKE ELITE darts.  Six “D” batteries required, not included. Available exclusively at Walmart.

This blaster is definitely large and looking to take charge! At pretty much $100 this bad boy is certainly the most expensive blaster to date, and that’s most likely a combination of being expensive to make as well as only being available in limited quantities at Walmart and select international retailers (TBD).

We could speculate on exactly how it operates, but we’ll definitely be getting one or two to show you exactly how later this year!

Nerf TekStrike Unveiled

TekstrikeWe’ve just received word of this interesting licensed accessory for tactical rails! The Nerf TekStrike is from EyeSpyToys, a company that I’ve never heard of was apparently behind Launch n’ Attack (thanks Vas of F2A), and who’s company website is currently just showing off this accessory. Check out FoamFromAbove for some photos of the ToyFair Booth, and here’s the media information directly from EyeSpyToys:

Product Overview
Nerf TekStrike from EyeSpy Toys is an exciting new attachment for NERF blasters. With programmable Smart Darts, patented hit recognition technology and Bluetooth connectivity,  Nerf TekStrike turns the backyard into an advanced wireless playing field.

Key Features

  • The Nerf TekStrike Storm Shield attaches to any NERF blaster’s tactical rail and casts an invisible sensory grid over the entire playing field.
  • The Nerf TekStrike system works with Smart Darts, which each contain a programmable RFID chip.
  • Using Bluetooth and RFID technology, the Smart Darts can be tracked. As a dart hits the Storm Shield, the type of ammo it was hit with and who the shooter was, are recorded, displaying the damage on the built-in LCD screen and sending the appropriate HIT points to the shooter’s screen.

Game Play

  • To start playing, select an ammo type, wirelessly program the Smart Darts by swiping against the Nerf TekStrike Storm Shield and then begin firing at the opponents shield, instantaneously being alerted of successful shots.
  • The single player training mode allows individuals to improve their accuracy to get ready for the next battle.
  • When players are ready for advanced battle scenarios, they can use a smart phone or tablet as a remote base to unlock new weapons, track team stats and select mission objectives – all available with the free Nerf TekStrike app download.
  • For the full video game experience, players can attach a smart phone to the Nerf TekStrike Storm Shield for GPS tracking, blaster upgrades, accuracy stats and more!

Pricing / Availability

  • Suggested Retail Price: $24.99
  • Includes the Nerf TekStrike Storm Shield and 10 Smart Darts
  • Availability: August, 2014
  • Recommended Age: 8+

This, to me, is incredibly strange. Not that Hasbro is allowing Tactical rail accessories, we’ve known they might allow 3rd party licensing of tactical rail accessories for a little while now. But that it uses Bluetooth and RFID to track darts and sense them. This is basically a re-vamped, 3rd party dart tag device. And the weird thing is that it’s relatively inexpensive considering the technology involved.

Giveaway Winners and The AFoN Show Episode 52: Fall ’14 Lowdown

Greetings Nerf Nation!  Deliberations are completed and after hours and hours of discussions we have finally found the winners of our Anniversary Giveaway.  We were quite impressed with the inspiring and well thought out entries you all sent in.  There were a few ideas that followed common themes which in all honestly we kinda expected, and it’s nice to know that so many of you share similar views as to the direction you would like to see Nerf go.  It took a while but two bright shiny entries floated to the top, here they are in no particular order:

The Elite Mega Pilum submitted by James Zhu- The concept for this single shot pump action Mega Dart launcher is simple and elegant in execution.  As seen in the picture below, “It has a trigger set very far back on the blaster and rear Nerf stock attachment point and comes with a faux wooden stock.”  But that’s only where the fun begins; the top tactical rail attachment is described as being inverted similar to the rail on the Titan that the Scout slides into.  “This allows instant integration of Pilum onto any tactical rail equipped blaster once its stock is removed.”  The Pilum took a popular discussion piece and gave us a practical application for a dual purpose blaster.

The Elite Mega Executioner submitted by Matthew Corrigan – One common thread between the entries was removable dart cylinders.  The concept for the Executioner goes one step further and truly makes that mechanic the focal point of the blaster.  “The barrel has a break in the end of the cylinder to have it pulled out. The break release button is located or the left side of the blaster.”  The cylinder holds 5 Mega Darts and can be slit out when empty after the break so you can reload with ease.

Congratulations Matthew and James!!  You should be receiving your Elite Pinpoint Sights (one for each of you) in good time!  We want to thank all of you for participating in our Giveaway.  We hope you had fun making your entries.

UK Nerf’s Toy Fair lowdown

321253 Nerf Demolisher 1[2]Over in the UK, Toy Fair is over, and UK Nerf has a write-up covering what they’ve seen at Hasbro’s closed-door booth. Of course he couldn’t take pictures, so along side the pictures we’ve seen he treats us to a description of what he’s experienced.

The Thunderbow doesn’t work like I had previously assumed; it apparently works somewhat like the Heartbreaker bow. When the string is pulled back the top arm comes back and once pulled back all the way, you release the string and off the Mega Dart goes. It seems to suffer from the same drawback problems that the Heartbreaker bow does, where if you don’t pull it back all the way you get shortened ranges.

The Agent Bow’s arms don’t flex like normal bows, but instead the string is made of some sort of latex or silicone like material. I’m very curious about this, since it makes it somewhat similar to the ever-popular Zing bows.

The Demolisher is quite the interesting blaster and while it is semi-auto now, it may become full-auto before it’s released because of the popularity of the full-auto Rapidstrike. The launcher underneath indeed does not come off, just like it appears in the pictures we’ve seen. It also sounds like it gets pretty decent ranges despite having a very simple method of operation. When you push the slide forward it primes the launcher and it launches on the pull back.

There was also a mysteriously empty stand in the booth, and when asked for information, the Hasbro attendants were mum on what was there. It’s speculated that it is a fairly large Elite blaster based on the size and position of the stand, and it sounds as though more information will be unveiled at/before ToyFair NY (Feb 16-19).

I don’t want to give it all away here, go check out his article here for more detailed information!

Nerf N-strike Elite Demolisher 2-in-1 unveiled

Nerf-nstrike-de

Another Monday, another blaster! Introducing the (prototype) N-strike Elite Demolisher 2-in-1! This blaster has been unveiled by Popular Mechanics in it’s prototype form, and it’s amazing!

They say that this is a prototype blaster, so we can’t be certain it’ll look exactly like this on release. But I would say that since they’re willing to show it, it’s pretty close to what we’ll get in our hands.

The article says that it uses Mega darts in the lower barrel, but as you can see they aren’t really Mega darts so their terminology is a bit off. I would think they’ll be called Mega Missiles or something similar to that. But without actually having it in my hands, who’s to say that it can’t fire Mega darts? The hole on that missile looks like it could be pretty close to the hole on the Mega darts.

Beyond the missiles we see a wonderful 10-round banana clip, which is something the fans have been wanting for a long time. Of course since this is N-Strike the clip will be backwards compatible with previous blasters, and previous clips will be compatible with this blaster. The Demolisher will retail for $39.99 and looks to be another flywheel blaster, which doesn’t make me mad as I’ve had good luck with flywheel blasters so far.

This blaster appears to be customizable up the wazoo with at least 3 tactical rails, a shoulder stock attachment point, and a barrel extension attachment point. There’s no word yet whether the under-slung missile launcher will be detachable but it really doesn’t appear to be from the picture above. The Popular Mechanics article does mention that there will be ‘laser sights for the foam sniper in you’ so we have yet another piece of information telling us we’ll see more accessories. That’s wicked sweet; I want.

This blaster will apparently be at ToyFair UK (probably ToyFair NY too), so we’ll get to see more of it then. Aside from the color, this has got to be the blaster that most of the NIC had been asking for. I know I can’t wait, it looks sweet! We’ll try to get more information and get back to you as soon as we can!

UPDATE: We just got the official description from Nerf:

NERF N-STRIKE ELITE DEMOLISHER 2-IN-1 Blaster

The AFoN Anniversary Giveaway!

Giveaway5We just released our 50th Episode of the AFoN Show on January 8th, and the AFoN website will be turning 5 years old on June 19th! In honor of our anniversaries we’ve decided to have a contest. We have TWO, yes TWO Elite Pinpoint sights to give away!

For this giveaway, you’ll have to design the next big blaster. The Slingfire is cool, but it’s not the big bad blaster this year, so if you had a chance to design the next big blaster; what would it be?¹ Be creative and use your imagination, but be realistic. Write something up and send your entry to giveaway@afon.us (please don’t post entries in the comments, but questions are welcome).

Be sure to include (at least):
  • Blaster Name
  • Unique feature(s)
  • Ammo Type (must be an existing ammo type)
  • Description and/or drawing (drawings will not increase your chance of winning).
    • Don’t use the build-a-blaster app on Nerf.com, we want something unique.

The giveaway will end on January 29th, 2014 at 11:59pm Central Standard Time. After the giveaway, we’ll deliberate on the two best entries while taking in to consideration the creativity, practicality, and overall idea behind the blaster. This is a worldwide giveaway so no matter what country you’re in, you can win!

Winners will be announced on February 5th along with the release of our 52nd episode of the AFoN Show.

If you haven’t already, stop by and subscribe to our YouTube Channel as well! (It won’t make your odds of winning any better, but it can’t hurt!)

1. Nerf is not sponsoring this contest, so none of your ideas will be made in to real blasters. That would be awesome, but the Nerf design team doesn’t solicit ideas from fans for legal reasons.
